Under 14 Girls’ Football: Withernsea 7 – St Mary’s 2

17 October 2023 (by admin)

A fantastic team performance from the U14 Girls’ has seen them progress to the next round of the National Cup.

Last night, Monday 16th October, saw the girls playing in only their second 11-a-side school football match. This was against St Mary’s, the team that knocked them out of the cup last year.

The WHS girls started strongly and were testing the keeper straight from the kick-off. The St Mary’s goalkeeper was on fine form yet again and denied many shots, commanding the area well and claiming the ball at close range. However, the pressure paid off as Withernsea broke the deadlock with a powerful strike from Marlie Warner to take the lead.

The goals kept coming, with Faye and Darcey adding to the scoresheet. After a disappointing goal kick, the ball dropped to a St Mary’s player who scored a wonderful long range shot to make it 3-1.

The WHS girls continued to dominate and battled all over the pitch, winning tackles and chasing every ball. The hard work was rewarded with another three goals in the first half - Marlie scoring her second, Charlie Collins firing home from close range and Lily Barker calmly finishing after the keeper was clearly beaten.

The football was lovely to watch, with all players linking up nicely across the pitch. It was a good game with all 14 squad members playing equal game time. The second half was a little more quiet - St Mary’s scored another long-range effort and Marlie got her third to finish the hat-trick.

The St Mary’s goalkeeper was their player of the match as the scoreline could have been even more. She protected the goal and kept the goals down, especially in the second half.

Well done to: Millie Campbell, Charley Blyth, Lily Barker, Charlie Collins, Connie Thompson, Chloe Clubley, Marlie Warner, Kaitlin Jowett, Luci MacKee, Poppy Smith, Elouise Hall, Darcey Wilson, Faye Dobson and Lily Anderson

Person of the Match: Marlie Warner (hat-trick hero!)

Coaches’ Player: Lily Barker (new centre-back!)
