Students’ compassion for others praised

Following similar efforts in recent years, staff and students at Withernsea High have once again shown their compassion for others by collecting donations of non-perishable food items that will help those who are most in need of support this Christmas.

Throughout December, members of the school community were encouraged to bring any tinned, dried and long-life food items into school where a central collection point was set up.

This year, all items will go directly towards helping people within the local community as part of a donation to Withernsea’s SHoRes food bank. Operated from the same premises as the popular and well-used Community Pantry, the food bank remains a separate entity that offers emergency supplies to those who are most in need of urgent support.

Organising the collection in school were Teacher of Geography, Maddie Griffiths, and Head of Personal Development, Andrea Monaghan.

Commenting on the success of this year’s efforts, Mrs Monaghan said: “You might be under the impression that at Christmas time, children are just concerned about what presents they are going to receive. This couldn’t be further from the truth, and I have once again been really proud of the way that our students have stepped up to give to others. I would like to thank them for their donations, and I’m delighted that these will go directly to help families in our local area.”

Praising the efforts of the school, SHoRes CEO Jayne Nendick said: “Once again we find ourselves overjoyed and overwhelmed with the generosity of the local community. We are grateful to the students of Withernsea High School, and their families, for helping to make a difference to people within the community this Christmas. Kind donations such as these highlight the thriving community spirit that exists in this area.”
