Under 14 Girls’ Football: Hornsea 1 – Withernsea 2

9 October 2023 (by admin)

Huge congratulations to the U14 girls’ football team who secured their first victory of the season last night (Tuesday 26th September) beating Hornsea 2-1 in the National Cup.

This was the girls' first 11-a-side match for school, having previously played 9-a-side at U13 level, and it was a pleasing first outing.

The girls started off a little apprehensive and Hornsea dominated the first 10 minutes, playing some lovely first touch football. They looked comfortable on the ball and took the lead early on after a loose ball kindly fell for their striker to finish past Chloe. This seemed to spark the girls into action, and they began to link up and play some lovely football throughout the pitch, creating many opportunities and often putting the Hornsea defence under pressure.

Hornsea looked strong at the back, but the girls were patient. A lovely timed through ball from Marlie W sent Darcey through on goal (her pace was untouchable) and she calmly slotted the ball home to equalise.

The second half was a little more even with both sides creating chances. Chloe looked comfortable claiming the ball in the area, and Hornsea blazed an attempt over the bar. The winning goal came from another fantastic through ball, this time from Elouise with great accuracy and precision. The defence could not keep up with Darcey who smashed the ball past the keeper to make it 2-1. The girls continued to battle for the remaining minutes and gave absolutely everything to ensure we claimed the win. Strong challenges throughout and huge team performance.

Players’ Player: Katlin J – an absolute brick wall in the back four who challenged everything and made some fantastic headed clearances.

Coaches’ Player: Lily A – Non-stop running down the wing, attacking with pace and defending with fierce challenge.

With a 15-player squad every single player contributed to the victory and represented the school with pride. A pleasure to take on the first fixture, well done everyone!

Well done to the following students:
Millie Campbell, Charley Blyth, Lily Barker, Charlie Collins, Connie Thompson, Chloe Clubley, Marli Jo Stocks, Marlie Warner, Kaitlin Jowett, Luci MacKee, Poppy Smith, Elouise Hall, Darcey Wilson, Ella Wilson and Lily Anderson.
