Year 8 Football: Sirius West 2 – Withernsea 4

9 October 2023 (by admin)

Sirius started the game on the front foot, playing some excellent football and forcing Hunter into some early saves. This continued throughout the first half, but some great blocks by Nimmo, Kitcher and Gant meant the game remained 0-0.

After yet another great save from Hunter, Sirius had a corner. Hunter claimed the ball and sent it down field. The pace of Stephenson Cass got him behind the defence and he calmly slotted the ball passed the onrushing goalkeeper. A few minutes later, after some neat play between Nicholson and Farren, the ball over the top again caused Sirius problems and the keeper made a good save from Stephenson Cass, but Eldon Thomson was on-hand to tap it home from a yard out to make it 2-0.

Right on the stroke of half time we managed to get a third goal thanks to good work from Eldon Thompson. Incredibly, in a game where we only got out of our own half three times, we had scored three goals.

The second half carried on the same way, with Sirius leading attack after attack. They got a goal back thanks to a penalty, before a long-range effort also beat Hunter to make it 3-2. However, WHS always had a threat on the break with Stephenson Cass and Purdy, while Jennison was in the midfield getting plenty of kicks for his troubles. A free kick was secured and through went Stephenson-Cass to wrap the game up with another composed finish to make it 4-2.

A great performance by the lads. They all put the effort in and showed great teamwork throughout.
