Year 8 Football: Sir John Nelthorpe (Brigg) 3 - Withernsea 2

26 June 2024 (by admin)

Withernsea High School’s Year 8 football team were unlucky to be on the wrong end of the result after putting in a great display against Sir John Nelthorpe school in the Humberside Small School’s Cup Final.

Mr Mountain, Acting Head of PE, provided the following match report:

"We started slowly and fell behind within two minutes from a corner being headed home by the attacker. We then started to grow into the game and started playing some lovely football. On the half hour mark, Eldon-Thomson won a free kick and Nimmo stepped up from 30 yards and bent the ball into the top corner giving the goalkeeper no chance. The opposition responded well with some long-distance shots but we went in level 1-1 at the break.

“The second half started well, with Campbell, Barker, Farren and Nicholson all linking up really well and playing some magnificent football. This resulted in a chance from a Ratcliff through-ball but unfortunately Eldon-Thomson dragged the ball wide. Against the run of play, Withernsea then found themselves 2-1 down - again from a corner, from where a tall defender rose highest to head home.

“Heads were not down though and the introduction of Beedham down the right-hand side saw more balance and chances created from his and Kitcher’s link-up play. Unfortunately, the next goal came for the away side again on the back of an error, where the striker was able to tap home into an empty net making it 1-3.

“To their credit, Withernsea kept going and were still passing the ball really well and getting into some good areas but were just unable to find the finishing touches. Beedham forced the goalkeeper into a great save and Hunter made an excellent save to keep the score line at 1-3. However, with four minutes to go, Nicholson scored from a free kick to keep hopes alive at 2-3.

“There were still chances from a Nimmo free kick, and Stephenson-Cass shot was saved, but unfortunately, they couldn't find an equaliser. Although the result was against them it was a great effort by all of the players. They played some really good football, with numerous comments made by spectators about how well they passed the ball.”
