Overview


Biology is the science of life. Biologists study the structure, function, growth, origin, evolution and distribution of living organisms. There are generally considered to be a number of different areas of biology to focus on in later study. These include biochemistry, genetics and physiology. Each of which consists of multiple subfields.  From the importance of our diet and our activity levels to breakthroughs in medical research and understanding how our DNA works – Biology is never far from the news!

Biology AS/A-Level is considered a facilitating qualification at KS5.  This means that many higher education providers consider it an extremely useful qualification to have.  This is especially true if you want to continue to study life sciences or medicine at a later date .Biology is also viewed as a useful qualification by employers, who recognise that it requires students to develop excellent skills in literacy, numeracy and analysis to succeed.  A-Level Biology is a challenging subject that moves your knowledge on from KS4 to look at aspects of our living world in much more detail. 

 

What will I learn?


The course

Students will study sections 1- 4 in Year 12 and sections 5 - 8 in Year 13.  All of this will be examined in 3 final year exams at the end of Year 13.  You will also be required to complete 12 assessed practical tasks over the 2 year course.

Section 1 - Biological molecules.

Section 2 - Cells.

Section 3 - Organisms exchange substances with their environment.

Section 4 - Genetic information, variation & relationships between organisms.

Section 5 - Energy transfer in and between organisms.

Section 6 - Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environment.

Section 7 - Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems.

Section 8 - The control of gene expression.

A higher education Biology qualification can help you move into a career in Biomedical Sciences, Teaching, environmental work and conservation projects, Zoology, Forensic Science and Biotechnology to name but a few, as well as continued biological research which is ongoing and ever popular.
