We use maths in every aspect of our lives at work and in practical everyday activities at home and beyond. Decisions in life are so often based on numerical information: to make the best choices, we need to be numerate.

Mathematics contributes to the school curriculum by developing pupils’ abilities to calculate; to reason logically, algebraically, and geometrically; to solve problems and to handle data. Mathematics is important for pupils in many other areas of study, particularly Science and Technology. It is also important in everyday living, in many forms of employment, and in most decision-making situations.

It enables pupils to build a secure framework of mathematical reasoning, which they can use and apply with confidence. The subject transcends cultural boundaries and its importance is universally recognised. Mathematics helps us to understand and change the World.


What will I learn?

Years 9, 10 and 11

Students will continue to build on the skills they have developed in Key Stage 3 by solving evermore complex problems involving number work, algebra, shapes and data.

They will begin to appreciate that Maths is a series of interconnected ideas and learn how to solve problems which may involve many different branches of mathematics.

Topics include:

• Trigonometry

• Pythagoras' Theorem

• Standard Form Calculations

• Surds

• Histograms

• Equations of lines and curves

• Volumes and surface areas of complex shapes


All pupils are set by ability in Key Stage 4 to ensure that they are appropriately challenged so that they can best make progress towards their target GCSE grades.



All pupils in year 9 & 10 are given a weekly homework which typically follows a set template. This will include an opportunity for pupils to practice a skill or procedure learnt in class before being given an opportunity to apply their learning by solving mathematical problems.

The homework is one sheet of A4 and will be stuck into pupils’ books on completion.

In Year 11 the pupils will receive a variety of different homeworks based on their specific needs throughout the year. This may include a single sheet similar to homework in the lower years all the way up to a full past paper to complete. The homework in Year 11 is designed to let pupils practice the key skills learnt in lessons as well as showing them the demands of GCSE questions.


In Years 9 and 10 the assessment schedule is the same as that seen in Key Stage 3. Year 10 however will complete actual GCSE papers as their end of year assessment so that teachers have as clear a view as possible on individuals’ strengths and weaknesses ready for Year 11.

In Year 11 the pupils will complete practice GCSE papers at the end of each half term. These will be used to inform planning for the next half term so that pupils’ misconceptions and gaps are addressed as the year goes on. This method of assessment will also regularly demonstrate the demands of GCSE to the pupils.
