Students receive a masterclass in entrepreneurship

On Wednesday 20th November, students at Withernsea High School benefited from the knowledge and experience of some of the region’s most successful business leaders during a masterclass in entrepreneurship.

The session was delivered by members of For Entrepreneurs Only (FEO), a Hull-based company made up of local entrepreneurs who collectively turn over around £3.2bn annually and employ over 22,000 people.

The day-long event provided a unique opportunity for fifty students in Year 8 to spend quality time with some of the region’s most inspirational business leaders. Listening to first-hand experience, students learned about different aspects of creating a successful business - from having the right attitude and good people skills, through to effective marketing strategies and strong financial management.

Working in groups, students were tasked with coming up with their own unique product or service which they then produced a business plan for. Each team member took on a different role within their ‘company’ and representatives from FEO were on-hand to deliver expert advice and guidance as the students prepared to present their ideas.

Presentations were judged on the quality of the overall business idea; marketing considerations; projected finances; the attitude of team members and the use of visual aids. A total of ten teams pitched a high standard of ideas, with the judges having the difficult job of narrowing them down to a top three.

The standard of ideas this year was outstanding. Among the many impressive creations were a mental health robot that detects your mood and responds accordingly to make you feel better and an automated oven that prepares meals and orders a food shop to ensure the right ingredients are bought.

In first place came Dotty Hawley, Hannah Lessells, Lauren Grantham and Ruby Kirk who impressed the judges with their idea for a smart-kennel for pets which would enable the owner to control the temperature from a smartphone to ensure the pet was always comfortable. Their design also featured extensive sound-proofing to ensure that noisy pets wouldn’t disturb their neighbours and that the animals themselves would be protected from loud noises such as fireworks on bonfire night.

Special awards to recognise budding entrepreneurs for enthusiasm, hard work and imagination throughout the day were also awarded to Henry Watkinson, Katie Bell, William Mackenzie and Corbyn Catt.

Event organiser and WHS Careers Leader Vicki Foster commented: ‘The students worked incredibly hard and took on-board the advice from the masterclass sessions. Their positive attitude and behaviour was commented on by our visitors and they should rightly be proud of the work they have produced. Well done to all the winners and a massive thank you to FEO and their members for facilitating yet another fantastic opportunity for our students.’

The goal of FEO is to help build the local economy by creating a private sector renaissance. They help entrepreneurs in Hull and East Yorkshire create wealth and jobs. Through regular events and initiatives, they aim to motivate, educate, inspire and support others. Their members give their time, energy, passion and resources and everyone at FEO works hard to promote Hull and the Humber region as a great place to start up and run a business.
