'And the winner is... Dance!'

Following their 2019 celebration of pop icons and the characteristics that define them, the students of Withernsea High School returned to Hull University’s Middleton Hall last Friday night with a brand new dance production inspired by the stars of the silver screen.

‘And the winner is…’ took inspiration from a plethora of movie icons and the soundtracks synonymous with their biggest and best-loved films.

Set in the context of a Hollywood Awards ceremony, the production explored different eras and genres of film as the students took to the stage and danced to some of the most popular songs featured in contemporary cinema.

Teacher of Dance Jamie Hughes commented: ‘I am extremely proud of the students for their commitment to performance and for their exemplary conduct both on and off stage.

They demonstrated great professionalism and I would like to thank them all for their hard work in ensuring this year’s dance show was another great success.

I would also like to express my sincere thanks to the many staff and student helpers behind the scenes who all contributed to the success of the show. Finally, our collective thanks must go to the parents, carers, friends and family of the performers for their continuing support of our dance events.’

Making a special appearance as the show’s compère was Gordon Beastall, a popular and well-respected former member of staff who many ex-students in the audience remembered with affection. Gordon taught Drama at the school between 1974 and 2005, during which time he staged a multitude of performances and encouraged countless students in the world of performing arts.

Gordon commented: ‘I had the great pleasure of compèring this marvellous event and would like to extend my thanks to Jamie for the kind invitation.

The students were great ambassadors for the school and I was extremely impressed with their performances. The whole evening demonstrated the many skills of the pupils and the dedication of the staff from the school’s Sport and Dance Department.

I loved the chance to work with current pupils and staff and was delighted to see so many ex-pupils in the audience.’

‘And the winner is…’ featured over 100 students from across all years of the school and took place on Friday, 24th January.

The show was professionally filmed and DVDs (£1.00 each) are now available to pre-order from Mrs Hughes at the school.
