Withernsea rise to the occasion in rugby victory

On Wednesday 21st November, Year 7 and 8 students from Withernsea High School took on Rise Academy in a Rugby match, which was officiated by Hull KR Community Coaches.

Held at Withernsea RUFC’s ground in Hollym, the fixture aimed to aid the development of rugby league within both schools.

The match was organised by Jon Beattie from Withernsea High School’s Sport department, with the team coached by Cover Supervisor Owen Mountain.

Mr Mountain provides the match report...

‘Withernsea started strongly early on with two exceptional full-length tries from Tom and Joe Tukoroa.

Rise Academy then replied with a good try, but couldn’t stop Withernsea scoring further tries from Tom Tukoroa (x2), Joe Tukoroa and a great effort from Shae Whitrod. This was followed by a great team try including a fantastic play from Mike Ward to set Harvey Clarke free, which resulted in some passing across the back line to Freddie Wright, who scored a deserved try.

Rise then scored another try right on half time to give a score of 32-8 at half time. After the break, Rise came out with some confidence and got back into the game due to excellent running from their number 12 and great footwork from the number 7. They then took the lead after another long distance run by the powerful number 12.

With 5 minutes left and 2 points behind, some immense defence led by Mike Ward gave Withernsea possession and, after a number of good drives, Joe Tukoroa scored a great try in the corner. Withernsea then got the ball back and young Henry Watkinson strolled in at the corner, sparking huge celebrations for the home side! The conversion was made by Tom Tukoroa and Withernsea won 42-34.

Well done to all the lads for showing a tremendous effort and attitude! A special mention to all the boys who hadn’t played rugby before, but did very well. Finally, a huge thank you to Withernsea RUFC for allowing us to use their facilities and for being fantastic hosts.’

Bob Wardman, Deputy Headteacher at Withernsea High School and Withernsea RUFC Coach, commented: ‘We were delighted to help facilitate this game and always look for opportunities to help develop rugby in the local area. We are grateful to the ‘Big Local’ Lottery committee who have provided invaluable funding for community development, enabling fixtures such as this to take place.’
