Top Three finish for Year 7 Footballers

Last Thursday, 10th January, Year 7 students competed in the final of the East Riding FA’s seven-a-side tournament at Wolfreton School.

After finishing first place in the initial leg of the tournament, expectations were high and our players were feeling confident.

Their first game against Wolfreton School got off to a promising start when Withernsea took an early lead through Freddie Finn. However, the team unfortunately left themselves open and, after missing a number of chances, the game finished in a 1-1 draw.

The second and third games played out with a similar story, as Withernsea took the lead in both before conceding late-on and having to settle for draws. Again, a number of missed chances were created which unfortunately cost them the wins.

With two games remaining, Withernsea knew they needed to win against a strong team from Bridlington’s Headlands School and went all out on the attack. This worked for most of the game and had it not been for the woodwork and an excellent goalkeeper, it could have been a different story. Again, Withernsea conceded in the last second to lose 1 - 0.

With third place available and the chance of a medal still to play for, the team finally managed to get the elusive victory against eventual runners-up South Hunsley. The win meant that Withernsea placed third out of 12 teams and came away with a well-deserved medal.

Teacher of Sport Jon Beattie commented: ‘The students played their hearts out and I was extremely pleased with how they performed. They have done themselves and the school proud.’
