Year 7 Football

On Friday 30th November, the Year 7 football teams travelled to the Goals football centre in Hull to take part in the East Riding five-a-side championship.

Following recent team achievements, there was a real sense of expectation in the air for their success in the tournament.

After an early morning departure from school, and a long bus journey through rush hour traffic to the venue, the players had to take to the pitch without any real time for a warm up.

A slow start for the boys’ team against Bridlington’s Headlands School ensued, resulting in an early defeat against one of the favourite teams in the competition.

Despite this early setback, they went on to win the rest of their games against Holderness Academy, Beverley Grammar and Beverley Longcroft.

Elsewhere in the competition, Headlands proved to be a force to be reckoned with – eventually going on to win the tournament.

Withernsea’s team did themselves, and the school, proud.
Well done to James Boasman, Tom Pindar, James Snaith, James Carroll, Will Jackson, Jake Harman, Freddie Finn and Dan Buttle.

The girls’ team similarly held their own against some of the strongest teams in the league. They played their best throughout the tournament, motivating each other and keeping their heads held high in hard game situations against the likes of Cottingham High School and South Hunsley.

A slow start for the girls' against South Hunsley put them on the back foot, with only the top two teams qualifying.

However, the girls played their best throughout the rest of the day with Erin Sennett scoring three goals to become the team’s top scorer.

Well done also to Libby Aktins, Gracie Palmer, Alex Hamilton and Kd-Mae Griggs.

Seven-a-side

After their defeat against Headland’s in the preceding week’s five-a-side tournament, Withernsea’s Year 7 team last week came face-to-face with them again – this time in the seven-a-side winter league tournament held at Beverley’s Longcroft School on Tuesday 4th December.

Spurred on by their previous loss, and fired-up for the challenge ahead, Withernsea’s team were determined to even things out. However, a strong Headlands team were hard to break down and after a number of chances, Withernsea had to settle for a well-earned one all draw.

Growing in confidence, Withernsea went on to secure comfortable wins in the rest of their games against Longcroft (WHS 4 – Longcroft 0), Hornsea (WHS 2 – Hornsea 0), Beverley Grammar (WHS 1 – Beverley Grammar 0) and Driffield (WHS 3 – Driffield 2).

Withernsea went on to win the league and will now join Headlands and Driffield School in the final at Wolfreton.

Teacher of Sport Jon Beattie commented: ‘I am really proud of the students for their spirit, attitude and the way they played. The team are now busy preparing to compete in the next stage at Wolfreton School in a few weeks’ time.’

Well done to: James Boasman, Dan Buttle, Tom Pindar, Jude Driver, Macauley Harman, Jake Harman, Will Jackson and James Carroll, plus Max Buttle (Manager!).

Goal Scorers: James Carroll (8), Jake Harman (5) and Tom Pindar (2).
