GCSE results pave the way for exciting futures

On Thursday 22nd August, Withernsea High School’s Year 11 cohort returned to the school to collect their long-awaited GCSE results.

The receipt of these results signalled the end of one chapter, and the beginning of an exciting new one, on a continuing academic journey which has seen students develop the skills, knowledge and attributes to succeed in a changing world, while achieving some excellent outcomes.

As was the case with last week’s A-Level results, the grades secured by the Year 11 cohort are destined to open doors to exciting new courses and challenges, with many students returning to study in the school’s Sixth Form while others embark on a diverse range of college courses and apprenticeships.

As well as some stunning individual performances at the top end of the grading system, a large number of students across the full year group performed better than predicted – amassing a solid collection of grades which will provide a strong foundation on which they can build their future progression.

Reflecting on today’s events, Headteacher Mark Crofts commented: ‘It is always worth remembering that examinations and their associated grades are only one part of a bigger picture and I am pleased that the results seen today have unlocked the doors for our young people to achieve their aspirations.

I am delighted for all of our students and it was brilliant to see and feel the excitement today as they opened their envelopes and reaped the rewards of their hard work and commitment to learning.

I know that our school community will want to join me in sending our congratulations to the Class of 2019, wishing them all the very best for their futures.

Finally, as always, our sincere thanks go to the parents, carers and families who have been strong partners in working alongside our staff to ensure our young people achieve more than they thought possible.'

In a message directly to the students themselves, Mr Crofts added: 'Congratulations, Year 11! The long wait is over and you have something to show for all the effort and commitment you have given to your courses.

It was brilliant to see and feel the excitement today as you opened those envelopes and to hear you talking about what comes next.

We are delighted that, for so many of you, the GCSE grades you have gained today have opened up the next chapter of your academic career.

For you, that might mean reaching your targets or achieving more than you thought you could; it might mean getting the grades you need to do your chosen course; it might mean the opportunity to spread your wings and do something completely different. Whatever it means to you, enjoy that feeling of success, and plan for more of it!

I know that all those in our school community will want to join me in wishing you all the very best in your future, whether you are staying to become our new Year 12, or taking up courses further afield.'
