Free School Meals (FSM)

Did you know that your child will be entitled to free school meals if you are in receipt of Universal Credit or a number of other benefits?

Your child(ren) will be entitled to Free School Meals if you, as the parent, are in receipt of any of the following:

• Job Seekers Allowance (Income Based)

• Income Support

• Universal Credit (and your net annual earnings are under £7,400)

• Child Tax Credit (but NOT receiving Working Tax Credit) – provided your annual income, assessed by the Inland Revenue, does not exceed £16,190
(Please note: this amount is subject to change in April every year)

• Employment Support Allowance (Income Related)

• Guarantee Element of State Pension Credit

• Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

What are Free School Meals?

In England a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school-aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process.

How do I apply?

You can apply directly to East Riding of Yorkshire Council online, by phone or in person. Please click here to go to the ERYC website for more information. .

Please note: the school does not directly handle applications.

How much will my child receive?

£2.70 per day will be credited to eligible students via the school's Cashless Catering system. Please note that any monies not spent from the daily free meal allocation will not be carried over to the next day, nor can the money be withdrawn outside of the Cashless Catering system.

Children do not receive cash; the school will provide a free school meal.  The allocation is a fixed amount to align with the "meal deal" in secondary schools and the two course school lunch in primary schools.

Students entitled to Free School Meals will have their allowance automatically added to their accounts on a daily basis.

What will my child be able to purchase?

The daily £2.70 will allow FSM children to choose from the same variety of sandwiches, hot meals, drinks and desserts available to all students from the school's canteen. The FSM allowance will also helpfully cover the cost of one of the school's excellent value 'Meal Deals' - consisting of either a hot meal and dessert, or a hot meal and a drink.

In addition to purchasable items, fresh water is freely available from a designated drinking fountain in the canteen or from a number of similar installations around the school.

Lunch menus are published on a fortnightly timetable on the school website. These can be accessed under the Student tab of the website on the Lunch Menus page. In addition, daily menus are also displayed in the student bulletin to keep students informed of their choices.

Will anyone know my child is claiming Free School Meals?

No. Entitlement to Free School Meals is kept as confidential as possible.

Following the introduction of Cashless Catering to Withernsea High School in July 2017, ALL students now pay for their meals using a thumb print or PIN number to access their funds.

This means the purchasing process in the canteen is the same for both FSM and non-FSM students with nothing to differentiate between the two. No one in the queue will know the difference.
