World Book Day 2017

On Thursday 2nd March, staff and students of Withernsea High School brought the characters of fiction to life as they donned fancy dress in honour of World Book Day.

The annual celebration of authors, illustrators, books and reading aims to inspire young people to pick up a book and discover a different world through the imaginations of writers past and present.

Students in years 7, 8 and 9 took part in a range of activities throughout the day, both in tutor time and during regular lessons. The final hour of the day was set aside for students to take a break from their studies to read their favourite books.

Last month, each tutor group was allocated a different book which would form the basis of a theme for World Book Day. Each form group was then tasked with creating a door display and accompanying fancy dress to match the theme of their book. The outcomes were incredible, varying from fantasy genre fairies to gothic horror ghosts.

Prizes were awarded to a number of forms and individuals to celebrate their efforts. The hard task of judging was left to members of the school’s senior management team who awarded prizes for the following:

Best door display - 7MJP (A Midsummer Night's Dream)

Best overall form costumes - 9JK (The Woman in Black)

Best student costume - Megan Doyle, 7MJP (A Midsummer Night's Dream)

Best tutor costume - Mrs Aitken, 7JA (The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe)

The World Book Day activities were led by the school’s English department. Mrs Davison, one of the department’s teachers who organised the activities, commented: ‘I am so proud of the sheer effort from staff and students this year. The door displays and costumes have reached a new level of “WOW-factor” and I can't wait to see what's in store for next time as it's going to be hard to beat this year!'
