A number of photos have recently reached us showing our Year 8 and 9 rugby team in action at an event before half term.
The team, which primarily consisted of Year 9 students plus a couple Year 8’s, took part in a tournament organised by Hull KR for schools in Hull and the East Riding.
A total of eight teams competed against each other at the event held at the KCOM Craven Park Stadium on Wednesday 15th February.
Prior to this tournament only two of Withernsea’s team members, Harvey Dearing and Declan Harman-Bevan, had played competitive rugby before and the team as a whole found themselves playing against some well-established competitors.
Sport Teacher Jon Beattie commented: 'The boys did themselves and the school proud. We were unfortunate to fall behind in most games but this was only due to lack of experience and minor mistakes. What our team lacked in experience was balanced by their commitment and desire to keep on trying.'
The team managed to score a draw with Trinity in the final game to prevent them coming last and every player left the pitch with a smile on their faces.
Special mentions go to Jordan Crane and Barney Morley who not only played superbly but also kept morale and spirits high throughout.
After impressing the KR players on the day, Withernsea’s team plan on returning to Craven Park in May to take part in another tournament.
