NHS trip - ‘A Day in the Life’

Yesterday (19/10/16), 30 students were afforded the opportunity to participate in a NHS careers event at the clinical training centre in Hull.

The day started with a keynote speech and motivational talk from local boxing champion Tommy Coyle. He talked passionately about making the right choices in life, having ambition and showing resilience in whatever you do. Tommy also promoted healthy eating as a vital part of a healthy lifestyle.

The students then broke out into a variety of workshops that took them through the life of a person. These showed how the NHS offer services to people at every stage of their life. The clinical training centre set up scenarios and demonstrations using the latest interactive dummies to role play a typical day for clinicians and healthcare specialists of all types.

Among the many scenarios were a birth simulation led by a trained midwife, the changing of a feeding tube on a 10 year old gastrectomy patient demonstrated by a community nurse and a demonstration of trauma surgery performed by a surgical team.

Elsewhere, a psychiatrist explained the process of supporting people with mental health issues and pathology technicians showed students how medical samples were taken and examined.

All students were also given valuable life-saving training by a paramedic who demonstrated CPR.

The day exposed students to a range of potential careers that many were unaware of. The delivery by specialists in a real life setting made it engaging, informative and fun.

One of the staff members who accompanied the students on the trip was Senior Science Technician Viki Foster who commented: 'The NHS Careers Event was a fantastic, hands-on day out for our students. The students were a credit to the school and they all really enjoyed the day – with the surgery workshop being a particular highlight. I would like to thank all at The Withernsea Big Local for helping to support this trip, enabling more students to experience this fantastic careers event and to Hull CCG and NHS for putting on such an informative and enjoyable event.’
