Last Friday night, around 90 students from Withernsea High School’s Year 11 cohort came together to celebrate the end of their GCSE exams, which in turn marked the end of their 5 years of compulsory education at the school.
The annual Year 11 Prom has become a highlight in the schools’ events calendar and provides a final opportunity for the year group to socialise en masse before going their separate ways in to further education, training or employment.
For many, the night began at the school where stretch limo’s awaited to take the excited and immaculately dressed teenagers to the venue. Even a heavy downpour of rain at the time of their departure couldn’t dampen their spirits as they were waved off by a large crowd of friends and family members.
The Country Park Inn on Hessle Foreshore was once again the venue of choice for the event. By the time the students arrived on the Foreshore, the weather had cleared and the stunning backdrop of the Humber Bridge and sweeping estuary provided an excellent photogenic setting for the occasion.
Upon arrival at the venue each student was handed a yearbook and a ‘Party Bag’ which contained a range of items including sweets, crisps, party poppers and bubbles. The bags were kindly created and supplied by Mandy and Paul Willingham of ‘Browns’ on Hull Road, Withernsea and were well received. Students were also given a special leavers’ card which featured caricatures of staff kindly drawn by local artist Claire Mould.
Food at the event came in the form of a barbecue buffet which was followed by a dessert of profiteroles. Live music was provided by fantastic local band Bonemuel, whose appearance was generously sponsored by the Fincham family from Golden Sands Holiday Park. The night ended with a packed dancefloor as the resident DJ kept the party going until midnight.
The night was a resounding success thanks to the hard work of lead organiser Zoie Wiseman, assisted by Tim Nuttall. Mr Nuttall commented: “I would personally like to thank Miss Wiseman for the hours of hard work she put in behind the scenes to make the event the success it was. I know all the students thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated the evening and it was the perfect way for them to celebrate the end of their compulsory time at Withernsea High School.”
Headteacher Richard Williman commented: “After all the hard work preparing for the recent GCSE examinations it was a pleasure to see our staff and Year 11 students enjoying themselves at this years Prom. As always, the students were a real credit to the school and looked fantastic in their suits and prom dresses. A big thank you to all the staff who were involved in the organisation of the event and supported it on the evening. We look forward to welcoming a large number of our leavers back to Sixth Form in September to continue achieving. For those who are leaving us for pastures new, we wish them all the best for the future and invite them to keep in touch with the school to share their successes with us through our Alumni.”
Yearbooks: A number of Yearbooks were left behind at the end of the night. We have two with names and signatures belonging to Eillish Clarkson and Zahra Bahnisse. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange a time to collect them. We also have a number of spare copies left, so if any year 11 student didn't get one on the night please email us to request a copy.
Pictures: A selection of pictures will be in this week's (Thursday 30th June) edition of the Holderness Gazette. Pictures will also appear in the Hull Daily Mail (publication date to be confirmed). Below are a handful of images taken on the night. More photos from the Photobooth will follow later in the week.
