One Step Ahead take a leap forward with donation

When a new community group became the victims of theft in the run up to Christmas, the loss of their equipment almost forced its heartbroken founders to give up in despair. However, after a generous donation from Withernsea High School the One Step Ahead group have taken a leap forward towards their goal of providing after school care and activities for children with additional needs.

In the aftermath of the break in at their storage unit, the group’s leaders, Cordie Mendes and Gemma Osbourne, set about trying to raise money to get the group back on track. The duo ran a successful stall at the High School’s annual Christmas Shopping Evening in early December, which not only got the ball rolling with their fundraising but also brought the groups’ plight to the attention of event organiser Julie Hare.

After learning of their misfortune, it was decided that all the money raised from the event would be spent on helping One Step Ahead replace their stolen supplies. As a result, just short of £300 has been spent on a range of arts and crafts supplies which will benefit many young people in the town.

Cordie Mendes commented: “On behalf of everyone involved with One Step Ahead, I would like to thank the High School for everything they have generously donated to us. We are sure that the children who attend our group will benefit from these fantastic supplies and have a great time using them.”

Julie Hare said: “Withernsea High School prides itself on its community spirit and we are delighted to have been able to help such a worthy local cause through the proceeds raised at our annual Christmas Shopping Evening. We must once again thank all the stall holders and supporters of the event who made this donation possible.”

Since launching in 2013, the Christmas shopping events have raised over £1500 for local and international good causes. These have included a substantial donation towards the purchase of a defibrillator for the school and community, plus a donation to Mapanene School  - Withernsea High’s link school in South Africa.
