Despite a lack of numbers to choose from, the 13 WHS players on show all performed to a very high standard. Hornsea started the quickest and their midfield three were at the centre of all the early play. Withernsea slowly came more into the game and started to play some good football with Cade Joynson, Callum Lewis and Liam Murrey linking well to cause problems for Hornsea.
A foul on Callum Lewis led to the first goal. Lucas Sneddon delivered a great free kick in the box which somehow Liam Murrey managed to hook back towards goal as the ball came over his shoulder. The Hornsea keeper could only palm the ball to Joynson who tapped in. Hornsea continued to look threatening going forward but the defence continued to hold firm with Jonny Slater being relatively untroubled. The equaliser came when Ben Garcia-Jones was dispossessed in his own box and the Hornsea player smashed the ball past Slater.
In to the second half and Withernsea looked comfortable with the four Year 11 students looking more and more accomplished and dangerous going forward. The hard work was undone as Hornsea took the lead against the run of play with a penalty.
Withernsea remained positive and Callum Lewis very nearly equalised with a 20 yard lob which agonisingly came back of the underside of the bar and away to safety. Minutes later the game was over as Hornsea made it 3-1. . Huge praise to all who represented the school.
