Overview


Hairdressing and beauty therapy offer a lifelong career with endless opportunities for development and variety within the role, giving you a versatile career that will adapt to suit lifestyle changes whilst presenting numerous opportunities to develop your skills and enhance your creative skills.

The hair and beauty industry is a major employer in the UK, providing employment for approximately 250,000 people. Key Stage 5 Hairdressing at Withernsea High School will equip you with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge needed to successfully transition to employment as a qualified Hair Stylist.


The department is run by qualified hair stylists who are passionate about their subject and helping students realise their potential.


What will I learn?


Year 12 - NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Women's Hairdressing

Health and Safety
This unit is about the legal requirements for health and safety and your responsibilities within your job role. You will learn the main requirements of the health and safety laws and rules affecting salons.


Good Customer Service
You will learn how to behave and communicate professionally with clients.


Customer Consultation
This unit you will learn how to analyse the hair, skin and scalp and perform tests that will guide you in advising clients on the correct products and services for them.


Shampoo and Condition
You will learn to treat different hair and scalp conditions using shampoos and conditioners. You will also learn to use massage movements correctly when shampooing and conditioning hair.


Change Hair Colour
In this unit you will learn how to colour hair using semi-permanent, quasi-permanent and permanent products. This will include applying full head colours, regrowth colours and how to create highlight and lowlight effects using woven and pulled through techniques.


Styling Hair
Following this unit you will understand the basic science of how styling affects the hair structure and helps to hold hair in place. You will cover styling techniques including blow drying and finger drying


Set and Dress Hair
You will learn rollering, spiral curling and pin curling techniques to achieve dramatic curled hairstyles.


Cutting Hair
Your cutting skills are among the most important you will need as a hairdresser and this unit will teach you all you need to know to create great hair cuts.


Salon Reception
This unit covers the important skills of welcoming clients and visitors, dealing with enquiries, making appointments and handling payments.

 

 

Year 13 – NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Women’s Hairdressing

Health and Safety
This unit provides the opportunity to help monitor risks within the salon and to the people who use it. It identifies and supports actions to reduce hazards providing a professional and safe place to work and for others to visit.


Promote Products and Services
You will learn and understand the financial importance of promoting products and services to clients within the salon.


Hairdressing Consultation
In this unit you will find out how to identify client’s needs, analyse their hair and scalp by performing tests and visual examination.


Cutting Techniques
You will use a range of cutting tools and techniques to create styles of precision, disconnected cuts for fashion and classical women’s styles.


Colouring Hair
Your colouring skills learnt at Level 2 will develop to include innovative methods of weaving and slicing, how to use contemporary block colouring techniques for bold statements whilst learning how to understand ways of personalising the colour to suit the individual.


Colour Correction
In this unit you will obtain the knowledge required to correct hair colour using methods including pre-pigmenting, pre-softening and colour removal.


Creative Styling and Dressing
You will develop skills with heated styling equipment and learn creative methods of wet and dry setting techniques for use on different lengths of hair.


Dress Long Hair
This unit includes styles from elegant rolls and sexy curls to alternative, commercial and avant-garde effects incorporating twists, knots and plaits.


Creative Hairdressing Skills
This unit allows you to show off your creative hairdressing techniques by hosting events such as competitions, photoshoots or hair shows.


Perming
You will learn to creatively apply advanced winding techniques to create curl on a variety of hair lengths and types.
