Overview

Our vision for the English and Media faculty is that Withernsea High School students are independent, creative and inspiring leaders with a thirst for knowledge and a love of literature.

Useful for careers in…

Teaching, Journalism and Creative Writing are some of the more obvious ones, but all colleges, universities and employers look
favourably on good results in GCSE English

Our mission is therefore to ensure our students have a confident, solid foundation of reading and writing on which to build a passion for learning.

In GCSE English, you will actually study for two separate GCSEs – English Language and English Literature.  Reading is at the core of both and therefore we encourage all our students to be independent and committed readers. The courses are two of the first to undergo dramatic change in the sense that 100% of these GCSEs are examined at the end of Year 11; students will not do any controlled assessments.

What will I learn?

Literature Language
• A Christmas Carol.

• A Shakespeare play
   (currently Macbeth)

• Animal Farm.

• 15 poems on the theme of conflict.

• Unseen poetry

• Creative writing to describe or narrate.

• Creative writing to present a viewpoint.

• Fictional reading and analysis.

• Non-fictional reading and comparison.
